What are your thoughts on the likelihood of Chris Conte returning next year? I thought he played surprisingly well when healthy (mostly because I had set the bar low). I also felt he handled the scrutiny from the blown assignment in the season finale against Green Bay last year rather well. Has his play being good enough to offset his injury history? The thought of drafting yet another safety when the Bears have so many other needs just drives me mad. How many years in a row now have they drafted a safety? – Matt K., Greendale, Wis., from email

I think a fresh start for Conte would be the best thing. When he was injured in the Cowboys game and an update was given on the video boards at Soldier Field last Thursday, fans booed. It is unfortunate that some fans cheer when players are injured. I think Conte has played well at times this season and certainly was improved over 2013. But multiple concussions and a lower back issue (not to mention past shoulder injuries) make him a medical risk. I think Conte realizes he needs a clean start elsewhere. Hopefully, his body heals up in the offseason and he can remain more durable.
