Empty Bowl event at Boone Grove
The Boone Grove Middle School Art Club, Builder’s Club and Chili’s Restaurant in Valparaiso have joined to help put an end to hunger with an “Empty Bowl” event in the Boone Grove High School cafeteria.
The event, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, is part of an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. The basic idea is simple: Community members create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to buy tickets to a simple meal of chili or soup, corn bread, a dessert and drink. In return, guests are asked to keep the bowl as a reminder of all the “empty bowls” in the world.
The money raised goes to an organization working to end hunger and food insecurity. Last year, the event raised more than $1,500 for the Porter Township Food Pantry, with 156 tickets sold. Students from elementary, middle and high school as well as staff and community members have spent hundreds of hours creating unique bowls for this event.
