Probation for man on sexual misconduct charge

A Chicago man was sentenced Wednesday to three years on probation for sexual misconduct with a minor.

Armando Trevino, 40, admitted in court that he fondled a 15-year-old girl on Dec. 1, 2009, at a residence in the 1800 block of Indianapolis Bouelvard in Hammond. Trevino was charged in August 2010.

Defense attorney Steven Kurowski said his client, who is disabled, cares for his four children and that his wife had stayed by his side. Trevino’s youngest child has special needs, Murkowski said.

Deputy prosecutor Michael Toth said the victim and her mother were “not thrilled” with the terms of the plea agreement but agreed to back it. He said the teen had been prepared to testify in court if the case had gone to trial.

Trevino must undergo a mental health evaluation and treatment if directed, Lake Superior Court Judge Diane Ross Boswell said.

Charges of criminal deviate conduct and sexual misconduct with a minor, both Class B felonies punishable by six to 20 years, were dismissed under terms of the plea agreement, which was submitted Jan. 13.

Hammond woman gets probation for theft

A Hammond woman was sentenced to one year on probation for theft in an appearance before Lake Superior Court Judge Diane Ross Boswell.

Diamond T’Lene Qui-che Reese, 25, admitted she and a co-defendant were in the 1000 block of Kenwood Street in Hammond when she took a Samsung cellphone, $25, a pair of Air Jordan shoes and Chapstick belonging to Fontaine Harris. She also took an iPhone, $11, headphones and school identification. The theft occurred Nov. 2, 2013.

Defense attorney Patrick Young said his client has one misdemeanor conviction and no felonies on her record. Young said co-defendant Laveras Jefferson was the most culpable in the crime and that his client never set out to harm anyone. Jefferson, 20, of Hammond, was sentenced to two years on probation in August. He had spent more than six months in Lake County Jail.

Deputy prosecutor Eric Randall argued for a two-year sentence on probation, noting Reese has not committed any new crimes since this case was filed.

Both Reese and Jefferson were charged with two counts of robbery, Class B felonies punishable by six to 20 years.

Gary man sentenced for attacking officer

Robert Fishawn Jones Jr., of Gary, was sentenced to an eight-year sentence on Wednesday for disarming a law enforcement officer and battery by means of a deadly weapon.

Jones, 33, was ordered by Lake Superior Court Judge Clarence Murray to serve four years in custody, and the remaining four years on probation on each charge, with the sentences running concurrently.

In court, Jones admitted he used a stun gun on East Chicago police officer Eric Godoy on Jan. 21, 2013, during a confrontation in the detention area of the East Chicago police station.

Jones served 731 days in Lake County Jail and was given time served for the executed portion of his sentence. The plea agreement, which was filed exactly two years after the crime, outlined the sentence. He had faced six to 20 years on the most serious of the charges. Three other counts were dismissed.
