Silver Cross Healthy Community Commission offers scholarships
The Silver Cross Healthy Community Commission is offering health care scholarships to residents in the 60432, 60433 and 60436 ZIP codes and those in Lockport-based Fairmont School District 89, according to a release from Silver Cross Hospital.
“The purpose of the scholarships is to provide financial assistance to those individuals pursuing a course of instruction for health care-related programs,” Margie Woods, chair of the commission, said in the release.
The amount of the scholarship will be determined based on the program selected. Scholarships may be used for tuition, books and school fees, the release said.
A completed application should be included, along with a personal statement explaining why the candidate has chosen the particular course of study and what the candidate hopes to achieve, plus three letters of reference from people not related to the candidate, the release said.
Candidates will be notified if they are selected for an interview by May 30. Written notification of scholarship awards will be sent to candidates on June 30.

Orland Twp. to host parent workshop
Orland Township will host a workshop, “The Most Common Parent Trap: What can I do if my teen started using drugs?” at 7 p.m. April 9 at the township office, 14807 S. Ravinia Ave., Orland Park, according to a release from the township.
The workshop will be presented by Orland Township Youth and Family Counseling Services with guest speaker David Lee and sponsored by Rosecrance, the release said. The workshop is being offered for families of teens who are experimenting with or are in a pattern of abuse with drugs and alcohol, it said.

USO has Frankfort drop-off
St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Frankfort is now an official USO drop-off location for items for the troops, according to a church spokeswoman.
People can drop off items, including hygiene, food, entertainment and other things at the church, spokeswoman Marcia Steward said. The pastor filed paperwork through the United Service Organization to make the church an official donation site, she said. Located at 12 W. Sauk Trail, at Center Road, the church is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
According to a church press release, recommended items include DVDs, video games, playing cards, books, magazines, crosswords, iTunes gift cards, headphones and ear buds. Hygiene items include baby wipes, deodorant, tissues, lotion, toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoo, soap, razors, female hygiene items, shaving cream and razors.
Food items include jerky, powdered drink mix, coffee, granola or protein bars, trail mix, dried fruit and nuts.
Other items include fabric dryer sheets, air fresheners, international calling cards, sunscreen and bug spray.
Prohibited items include alcohol, pornography, tobacco and aerosol sprays.
Donors are reminded that shipping may take up to three weeks, so perishable items that spoil or melt should be avoided.
