Libertyville
Honor: Highland Middle School is being designated an Illinois Horizon Schools to Watch for 2015, the highest and most prestigious honor given by the Association of Illinois Middle-Grade Schools (AIMS). The school is one of only two schools in the state to receive the award for the first time this year, while four other schools were redesignated for the second time in 2015. The award will be presented to the school during a special visit from AIMS representatives this spring. Highland Middle School also will be recognized and showcased at the annual AIMS Summer Splash event this summer in Tinley Park, and at the National Schools to Watch Conference in Washington, D.C., in June. During the national ceremony, Highland officials will be honored at a gala dinner and are invited to meet with local representatives of Congress at Capitol Hill to discuss current topics in education pertaining to middle. Highland Middle School applied for the recognition and completed a lengthy application.
Mundelein
Science night: Mechanics Grove Elementary School presented a night of intrigue with “Science, It’s Your Turn to Change the World.” The goal of event allowed student leaders to shine. The event exposed students to many real-world experiences. When children provide service to the school community, they learn about life, the importance of a strong work ethic, relationships, and what it takes to be a leader. The children planned, developed and executed this event. They introduced speakers, greeted visitors, helped guest presenters set up their exhibits. In addition, children shared their grade-level science investigations as museum docents in each hallway. Students developed a strong voice in this event as they explained their science projects.
Waukegan
Art show: Students from Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 elementary schools will have their artwork on display at Waukegan City Hall, as part of Youth Art Month in March. More than 200 of the best work from students in kindergarten through fifth grade will be hung throughout City Hall all month long. A special reception and awards ceremony is planned March 25 at 100 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. A gallery viewing on that day will begin at 5 p.m., with an awards ceremony following at 6 p.m. Members from the community are encouraged to stop by City Hall during the month of March to view the student artwork. Scholarships: Waukegan Township Scholarship fund announced the availability of scholarships to graduating high school seniors and college students. Applications can be obtained online at http://www.waukegantownship.com or the Waukegan Township supervisor’s office. Applications should be mailed to Waukegan Township Supervisor’s Office, Attn: Scholarship Program, 149 S. Genesee St., Waukegan, IL 60085. The application deadline is 4 p.m. April 3.
