Valparaiso and visiting Wright State split a pair of one-run decisions Saturday in Horizon League baseball, with Valpo winning the opener 7-6 and losing the nightcap 5-4.
Dalton Lundeen (2-3) allowed two runs (one earned) and struck out nine in seven innings to win the opener. Leadoff hitter Spencer Mahoney was 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs for the Crusaders.
Jeff Edwards drove in three runs in the nightcap for VU (9-13, 5-3). The teams will wrap up their three-game series with a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday at Emory Bauer Field.
VU softball splits: Valparaiso’s softball team rallied from three runs down to beat visiting Wright State 9-7 in the second game to earn a split of a Horizon League doubleheader. Wright State rallied from a six-run deficit to win the opener 11-9.
Sierra Pico was 6-for-7 with two doubles and three runs scored on the day for VU (8-17, 2-3). Tarah McShane was 5-for-7 with four RBIs and Stephanie Moreno finished 4-for-7 with four runs. The teams will play again at 1 p.m. Sunday at VU.
Cal College baseball sweeps: Enrique Zamora pitched a four-hitter in the opener and Edward Arambula threw six-hit ball over six innings in the nightcap as Calumet College swept visiting Judson (Ill.) 7-0 and 7-3 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball.
Reinhold Navas and Elliot Torres drove in two runs each in Game 1 for the Crimson Wave (7-15, 4-6) and Navas was 3-for-4 with two RBIs in Game 2. Luis Rondon also drove in two runs for Cal College in the nightcap.
PUC, PNC split in baseball: Freshman Willie Bennett earned his first collegiate win as Purdue Calumet beat visiting Purdue North Central 4-1 in the opener of a CCAC doubleheader. Bennett (1-1) pitched six-hit ball over 5 2/3 innings and John Livingston had a two-run single for the Peregrines (11-5, 4-5). Purdue North Central (11-11, 7-4) won the nightcap 3-1 to earn a split. The teams finish their three-game series at noon Sunday at PNC’s Hicks Field in Westville.
PUC softball loses pair: Purdue Calumet’s softball team was swept 9-2 and 11-3 by visiting Clarke (Iowa). Olivia Donley had three hits on the day for the Peregrines (9-10).
VU women’s tennis falls: Kathleen Hebble won in straight sets at No. 2 singles for Valparaiso’s lone victory in a 6-1 Horizon League women’s tennis road loss to Wright State. The Crusaders are 2-10 overall, 0-2 in the conference.
