Round Lake
Author visit: Children are like “little sponges.” So little things mean a lot to them and even a silly book can mean a lot in their early learning. The fact that everyone looks different — and that’s OK —- is the message that Jill Rivkin, author of a motivational children’s book “Crazy Hair,” will be giving as the featured guest at the monthly K-PREP (Kindergarten Preparation) meeting at 5 p.m. April 9 at the Robert W. Rolek Community Center, 814 Hart Road, as part of a United Way of Lake County program for preschool children and their families. Rivkin describes “Crazy Hair” as a book that emphasizes how our hair is as unique as each one of us. The book teaches self-confidence and self-love to kids. All K-PREP programs are presented in English and Spanish by certified early childhood teachers. A monthly book, CD, and resources are provided to parents with preschool children. The program is designed to help children develop the skills they need to succeed in school. Children ages 3-8 may attend the session. Childcare is available while the parents attend the program sessions. The program is made possible through a grant from United Way of Lake County in cooperation with local community partners, Mano a Mano Family Resource Center, and the Special Education District of Lake County (SEDOL). Admission is free. Details, call (Spanish) Patricia Martin, (847) 201-1522 or (English) Cecilia McKenzie, (847) 986-2314.
