Author visit: David Lester, author of “The History of Boating on the Fox Chain-O’Lakes,” recounts more than 150 years of regional development which revolved around the Fox Waterway, and which rekindled the spirit for generations of Chicagoans who came for sport, recreation and relaxation at 2 p.m. April 11. Books will be available for sale and signing.

Kite contest: During the annual Kite Decorating Contest, kids ages 3-13 can pick up a kite template, decorate it at home and bring it back to the library by April 19. Everyone earns a small prize and all kites will be displayed.
Cake contest: Guess the Book Cakes contest will be held during National Library Week, April 12-19. Bake and decorate a cake that gives clues to the title of the book that inspired it. Perhaps you’ll bake a cake with the iron throne. Cakes will be judged by popular vote and looks alone, no tasting. The winner will win a $25 Amazon gift certificate. Decorated cake entries will be accepted from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 13 and 14. Cake viewing and voting will take place from 3 to 8 p.m. April 15. Contestants may pick up their cakes from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 16 or 17.

Louis Yates’s New York Times best seller comes to life in ArtsPower National Touring Theatre’s newest musical about the irresistible Dog who loves everything about books. Workshop: Me, Inc., a free workshop, incorporates three sessions to encourage you to think like an entrepreneur and invest in yourself, at 9:30 a.m. April 11. Laptops provided or bring your own. Discover resources for job searching, education, and careers. This is the information you need before writing your resume or deciding on your career. Registration required.
Fundraiser: The annual READing run/walk fundraiser, celebrating the library’s upcoming summer reading program, Read to the Rhythm, will be held Aptil 11. The race starts and ends at Zion Park District, 2400 Dowie Memorial Drive. The timed READing Run 5K is ideal for both serious runners and casual walkers, and begins at 8 a.m. Participants could earn a division placement with a medal or trophy. The noncompetitive 5K Fun Run, where everyone earns a ribbon, starts at 8:10 a.m. and is ideal for strollers, dogs, kids, etc. After the run, participants and family members will be treated to refreshments, raffle prizes and an awards ceremony. All walkers and runners receive a raffle ticket, with the grand prize being an iPod Shuffle. Registration links and a course map are available at zbrun.org. The race entry fee is $30, $25 for students ages 18 and under. Group rates are available. Register online by April 10 or onsite at the race. Proceeds from the READing Run help the library provide quality programs for the community.
Author visit: Authors Stacey Kade and T.M. Goeglein will discuss current and future projects while engaging the audience and answering questions at 7 p.m. April 11. Kade, former award-winning corporate copywriter, is the author of “The Ghost and the Goth” triology and “The Project Paper Doll” series. Goeglein is the author of the “Young Adult Cold Fury” series. Themed beverages and hors d’oeuvres will be served. Book signings and a prize auction will follow the panel. For grade 5 through adult. Registration required.
