Calendar
April 22 is Earth Day — please take care of what we have been given. Recycle, reuse, reduce.
April 22 is also the Diocese of Gary Catholic Youth Organization Spelling Bee at St. Mary Catholic Community School in Crown Point. Competition starts at 6 p.m. This is the 43th annual CYO Spelling Bee competition. Participants from 13 local Catholic schools will compete. Divisions include third and fourth grades; fifth and sixth grades and seventh and eighth grades. This is the third year the event is being held at St. Mary in Crown Point.
April 24 is the last day to get your department entry in to play in the first Public Safety Softball tourney in Crown Point sponsored by the Crown Point Volunteer Fire Department and the city at Legacy Fields in the Crown Point Sportsplex. All proceeds go to the Hoosier Burn Camp. The 12-team, one-day, double-elimination tournament is from 8 to 6 p.m. May 9. The concession stand will be open for food and drinks, including alcoholic beverages. Hopefully there will be teams of firefighters, police officers, and EMS personnel active or retired from all over Northwest Indiana. If a community doesn’t have enough people for a team of just one department then combine them and work together to represent your community.
April 25 — Nelson’s Port-a-Pit Fundraiser for the Winfield Community Foundation will be in Walgreens parking lot at 109th Avenue and Randolph Street from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year they are serving chicken, ribs and Pit-tatoes. You can get your tickets ahead of time at Walgreens or First Midwest Bank in Winfield. This is to help buy playground equipment to put in the John B. Curley Memorial Park.
Ross Township trustee’s office is accepting registration for the upcoming season of adult softball league play at Hidden Lake Park. Call 769-2111 for information.
April 30 — St. Helen’s Philoptochos Ladies Society at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 8000 Madison St., Merrillville, is hosting its eighth annual Benefit Spaghetti Dinner for the Ross Township Food Pantry. In addition to the spaghetti dinner there will be a Greek Bake Sale, vendors and basket raffle. The Greek bake sale by itself is worth a visit. Yummy.
