SUP races: The RK Sunshine SUP Series paddleboard race, hosted by Island Water Sports, is Aug. 22 starting at 9 a.m. on the south side of Pompano Pier. According to race director Roray Kam, the second and final race of the series has a number of elite competitors from Florida and elsewhere. The event features an open recreational 3-mile race and a 6-mile elite race, including buoy turns and a short beach run between laps, in different age and board divisions. Entry fee is $45 by Aug. 20 and $60 after. Also scheduled are a free kids race, tandem races, Special Olympics races and SUP board demos, along with live music, food and drinks. Snakehead tournament: A JD’s Custom Baits Snakehead Round-Up is safe light to 2 p.m. Aug. 15 out of Veterans Memorial Park, 7044 NW 1st St., Margate. Bonefish survey: Florida International University is conducting a survey of bonefish anglers as part of its Project Bay Bones to find out about their bonefishing experiences and figure out what is happening to bonefish and why the bonefish population appears to be declining. The online survey is for those who fish for bonefish in Florida Bay, the Keys or Biscayne Bay. Safe boating: U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 34 has an eight-hour safe boating class Aug. 22 at Imperial Point Hospital, 6401 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale. The course encompasses seamanship, equipment and legal requirements, emergencies and navigation rules. Cost is $50 and there are discounts for multiple family members. Park closure: The East Everglades Area of Everglades National Park will be temporarily closed to all access from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily, effective immediately. The closure encompasses all East Everglades land and facilities administered by the park that are accessible from SW 168 Street or SW 237 Avenue in Miami.
