If a superpower is defined as a nation absolutely militarily, economically, culturally and politically dominant, there have been only two superpowers in history – the Roman Empire and the United States. Like Rome, the U.S. failed to solve the problems of the Middle East. We are engaged in the horror that is endless war on the other side of the planet while building and sinking vast sums of money into the region – just like the Romans. Perhaps worse, the U.S. has failed to solve the problem of poverty at home despite being the richest nation in history. We are very rich, but not prosperous; very powerful, but not wise. At the peak of empire, the Romans believed Rome was eternal. They were wrong.
