It was with great interest that I read the Tribune editorial about raising the age to 21 to buy cigarettes and how that would reduce teen smoking. But if a teen really wants to smoke, he or she can always get an older person to buy the cigarettes.
What some people don’t realize is that many people start smoking as teens but eventually give it up as they age. I started smoking at 18 but completely stopped in my early 50s and it was no problem for me. I am now in my late 70s and don’t miss it.
The real problem lies in the fact that parents don’t know how to talk to their kids. If parents really told them the sad truth about the evils of smoking, many of these youngsters would not take up the habit.
