Officials blocked off a portion of Wells Street in the Loop neighborhood downtown after a small fire caused a hazardous materials response to the area Thursday evening.

About 9:15 p.m., private engineering company workers were drilling for soil samples on Wells Street between Quincy Street and Jackson Boulevard when they appeared to strike an underground power line, causing a brief fire, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

The fire caused some power outages in the area, Langford said.

No one was injured in the incident, and officials are still investigating.
