Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Unorthodox approaches are a rule around Joe Maddon’s teams, and he kept it fresh Sunday morning as the Cubs returned from St. Louis.

I raced in from the airport to Wrigley Field, avoiding the Chicago Marathon traffic downtown. The team had set up a brunch for players on the warning track, complete with a bacon station and a pig’s head centerpiece.

I just caught the last few minutes as the late-arriving players piled food on their plates. The Cubs have become famous for skipping batting practice and workouts much of the season, and Sunday was no different.

After a handful of players played catch, they retired to the clubhouse. They’ll have a day to rest up for a huge Game 3 on Monday.
