Hawks sighted along the Calumet River trail last week haven’t attacked any domestic animals or small children yet, but the Town of Highland is asking residents to keep a close eye.

A woman last week reported she was walking her Chihuahua around Homestead Park on the town’s north end when a hawk started swooping down a little too close for comfort, Park Director Bob Knight said Tuesday. The hawk didn’t hurt the woman or dog, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t or won’t if it has the chance, he said.

“They do eat squirrels and other small wildlife, so the town put out the precaution that they may not want to have small animals unattended,” Knight said.

Calumet River trail runs along the Little Calumet River and near the town’s Blue Heron rookery, Knight said.
