The Bears traded a sixth-round pick for Khari Lee. How is he panning out so far? I know a lot of the stuff he does won’t necessarily show up in the box score, but does he look like a long term contributor? — Paul D., Bradenton, Fla.
For starters, the pick the Bears shipped to the Texans in exchange for Lee was a sixth-round pick in 2017, so it is not going to affect the draft this coming spring. The Bears clearly were not satisfied with the depth at the position through training camp and preseason and that motivated them to make a move.
Lee is a young player coming from Bowie State as an undrafted free agent this year so I think there is an adjustment period for him. You’re right, a lot of what he does will not show up in the box score and he hasn’t been used a whole lot, mostly in three-tight-end formations. Lee has been on the field for 30 offensive plays (five this past Sunday at Kansas City) and 42 special teams snaps. If he develops, I think this is a trade that will work out well for the Bears because they will get two seasons out of him before forking over the draft pick to Houston. He’s still a very young player with growth potential.
