Here is a look at what some Southlanders have achieved in college, according to releases from the schools:
Purdue University Calumet
Kelley Walsh, of New Lenox, is the first student at Purdue University Calumet in Hammond, Ind., to receive a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. The Honors College student received a $3,500 scholarship to study abroad this fall in Costa Rica.
The scholarship is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education.
Walsh, 19, is a sophomore nursing major and Spanish minor. She departed Sept. 26 for a three-month experience at the Universidad Veritas in San Jose, where she is to take health care credit courses in English and medical Spanish. She was to stay with a host family.
“I have wanted to study abroad so I am excited to receive this scholarship,” said Walsh, an aspiring nurse anesthetist. “Since I pay for my education myself, this scholarship is much appreciated.”
Although she said that the reputation of Purdue Calumet’s nursing program attracted her to the university, Walsh also received help from Education Abroad campus coordinator Judy Moore and April Valentine, assistant director of immigration and Education Abroad. They helped Walsh navigate through the scholarship application process.
