Too hot: Zach Miller
For the fifth time in six games, Miller found the end zone. His touchdown came courtesy of a 9-yard bullet from Jay Cutler late in the third quarter. Miller, in man coverage against Redskins safety DeAngelo Hall, made a swift break on a slant route and made an easy catch. He also added a 30-yard grab in the first half, the offense’s third-longest play all day. It was a good sign as the Bears get used to life without Martellus Bennett.
Too cold: Kyle Long
The third-year lineman has been solid in his transition from right guard to right tackle. Sunday, however, was not his finest hour. Long was beaten twice for sacks, including a second-quarter sequence in which outside linebacker Trent Murphy blazed around the edge and drilled Cutler to force a fumble. Long also was called for a first-down false-start penalty late in the half. “I had a really (crappy) game,” he said. “That was uncharacteristic. The good news is we get another game next week.”
Just right: Alshon Jeffery
The big-play receiver sprung free on a key 50-yard reception on the Bears’ final drive. “They were in the perfect defense and we took advantage of it,” Jeffery said. Jeffery’s longest catch since Week 6 of last season helped put the Bears in range to tie Sunday’s game with a field goal. (Alas, Robbie Gould missed his opportunity to do so.) Jeffery (six grabs, 107 yards) also had a 20-yard touchdown catch and surpassed 100 yards for the fourth time this season.
