The last time that I checked the United States was still a democracy with the right to free speech and to vote. You would never know that when reading Patrick Reardon’s commentary piece, “Memo to GOP: Dump Trump now.” Reardon’s wants the GOP establishment to find a way to exclude Trump from the presidential race. Whether we agree with Trump or not, he continues to be popular with a segment of the electorate. Having “elites” select our candidates would undermine the founding principles of our country, including democracy, free speech and the right to vote. As the founders intended, for better or worse, the majority of citizens should decide elections.
