It’s the end of an era for a used bookstore on Elgin’s west side.

“We locked the door for the last time tonight,” said Judi Brownfield as she closed Books at Sunset Saturday evening.

“It’s been a wonderful journey,” said Brownfield, who, along with her husband, Mike, opened the 1100 South St. store 16 years ago.

Once the doors were closed, Spiritual Director Michael Murschel presided over a candle-lit “celebration of life.”

“Remember the good things about the store,” he said. “Put a new memory into that book that is life.”

Regular customer and Larkin High School junior Calli Bilger, 16, was there with her family to wish Brownfield well.

“She’s been here since I can remember,” said Bilger, pointing out that the book shop has been open as long as she has been alive.

“There have been so many good times,” said Brownfield, who has also worked on various Elgin events, including Nightmare on Chicago Street.

“She has taken involvement in the community to the next level,” said Elgin City Councilwoman Tish Powell, who stopped by to support Brownfield. “People know her on so many different levels.”

Brownfield is planning her next move, but expects to stay active in the city’s events.

“This really isn’t good bye,” said Murschel, “this is see you on the next page.”
