Diane Ahrens is a busy lady.

When she’s not arms deep in buttercream frosting at Piece-A-Cake Bakery, the East Dundee shop she runs with her husband, she’s also juggling her role as the president of the Dundee VFW 2298 Ladies Auxiliary.

The latter is especially keeping her busy these days, as Ahrens and fellow Auxiliary members are in the midst of planning a baby shower at the end of the month for about 25 Chicago area women veterans who are expecting.

The community is invited to attend the event, from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at the VFW Post, 117 S. First St. in West Dundee. Attendees are encouraged to bring a wrapped children’s book. Gift cards and diapers are also welcome.

“We are very excited to have the veterans come and enjoy the evening with us,” Ahrens said. “Thirty-five years ago I was an expecting veteran when I was discharged. I have come full circle and I’m excited to help other women veterans.”

Because space is limited those who would like to attend should RSVP by calling Ahrens at 847-836-6703.

For those who cannot attend but would like to help, Ahrens is collecting donations of new baby supplies. Wish list items include receiving blankets, burp cloths, diaper bags, backpacks, diapers, wipes, sleepers, onesies, gift cards, and children’s books. They can be dropped off at the bakery, 304 N. River St., or at the VFW after Jan. 18. Donations of gift cards or cash will be used to purchase larger items.

Piece-A-Cake will, fittingly, provide desserts for the shower, and Ahrens is asking local restaurants to participate by providing appetizers and finger foods.

“We’re working to make this an evening to remember,” Ahrens said.
