In response to Kate from Homewood: Yes, I do stick up for the Chicago police because what are they supposed to do when they come to an area and someone has got a gun or a knife, and is waving it? Plus, these people are breaking the law, breaking into things or damaging property, or who knows what? All these people who’ve been shot; it’s not like they’re just standing there doing nothing. They are breaking the law when they’re doing it. If these people would learn to obey the law, the Chicago police would leave them alone.

Well it’s January again and the cost of living, according to our federal government, is zero percent for Social Security, meaning no benefit increase in 2016. But those in Illinois’ public employee pension funds will get a 3 percent raise? So the cost of living goes up for one group, while the other stays the same. Looks like the only way to correct this inequity is for the state to file for bankruptcy, which makes all contracts null and void.

Don’t be so quick to criticize South Siders for their supposedly poor use of the English language, especially seniors who were raised by immigrant parents trying to learn English and lived through an era when survival surpassed education. Fast-forward to the 21st century, where hardships have been few and opportunity is widely available, but poor grammar permeates TV, radio and all walks of life. It’s become painful to listen to interviews and watch talk shows. Incorrect verbs, double-negatives, the omission of “ly” on adverbs, to name a few, is becoming all too common.

I have noticed a lot of problems with St. James Hospital, both as a visitor and as an ex-volunteer there. They should get new ownership and hire new staff. God forbid if my health takes a turn for the worse or I get in an accident. I will not go to St. James Hospital for treatment. I’ve gotten better treatment at South Suburban and Ingalls hospitals.

People who claim that Donald Trump is saying what most of us are thinking should speak only for themselves. His thoughts aren’t mine or the majority of those I know. More to the point is what actions will he take on his thoughts? He speaks a lot, but says nothing. He never really answers a question directly, always spinning his non-answer into another direction. He reminds me of a grade-school bully with his name calling. Is this seriously the kind of person people think should be president of the United States? You get to be a bully when you own a company. You need to lead when being the head of a government. Those are two very different things.

To all the people in Chicago who believe the Chicago police do not treat mental illness correctly, I have a solution. Maybe the city could get Dr. Phil to participate in ride-a-longs in police cars. Or how about Dr. Frasier Crane? This should help. We ask a police officer to also be a priest, social worker and therapist. But, do not make mistakes, even when making split-second decisions.

The punishment for not passing a background check for a citizen is denial of the right to buy a gun. The punishment for terrorists who we know are very dangerous and would also fail a background check is getting released from the Gitmo prison. Not sure how the president can make sense of that.

Wheaton College is a private, religious institution. If you don’t agree with their beliefs, you choose a different school to attend as a student or as a place of employment. Period!

I’m getting tired of these protests. If these people wouldn’t run away from the police, they wouldn’t be shot. Teach your kids respect and respect will be given back.
