A Tribune poll found that most Chicagoans distrust the police. Duh! Not to denigrate the Tribune and its pollsters, but what did they expect the results to say other than the results they received? Of course the public distrusts police officers, the Police Department and the mayor’s office. Over the past six months the media have done nothing but chirp about how the public is bullied by law enforcement. Surely these survey results were expected, almost like people being surveyed about why they frequent grocery stores: We go to the Jewel because we like food. No surprises there.
My question is this: OK, you have these survey results, now what do you expect to do with these results? Do you request the mayor’s resignation? Well that has been requested, and it isn’t going to happen. Are you going to fire the police commissioner? Well, that event has already occurred.
Rather than produce meaningless surveys, why not offer suggestions to deal with gangs, lawlessness, police and community interaction and so forth? Try to do something constructive.
