Remember when we were told air fares, groceries, road repairs, taxis and everything related to petroleum went up because oil was so expensive? Oil is now cheaper than it’s been in years, nothing is less expensive and airlines are reporting record profits. What goes up does not necessarily come down.

Tinley Park

I was unpleasantly surprised to read that Tinley Park gave preliminary approval for two gambling cafes. I agree with the Main Street Commission’s concern that they are in conflict with Tinley Park’s family orientation. Just because we can have them does not mean we should. We already have plenty of gambling opportunities. Do we really need more? I shudder to think about what’s next.

Gov. Bruce Rauner is such a liar. He’s blaming the Democrats, but the whole bottom line is all he needs to do is to forget about his turnaround agenda to lower the power with the unions. Then we would have a budget, which is his job and his responsibility as governor. I think if we’d recall anybody for the election, we would recall Rauner and get him out of office. He’s the biggest mistake of the year.

This is a response to Marie E. Roman’s letter to the editor concerning the Catholic Church protecting priests accused of exploitation and abuse. I agree with her, in essence, but for every person who leaves the church because of this, it is because their faith was not that strong and that’s why they left. They needed an excuse, and there was a good excuse for them to leave. Marie, you were on to something, but not completely correct.

One of the new laws in Illinois for 2016 is that someone here illegally can now practice law. That shows you how much power people here illegally have developed thanks to our incompetent politicians. I’m sorry, but I support term limits.

Don, Chicago

This is in regards to the commenter from Lockport talking about the 3 percent raise that the retirees did not get this year. He said that some retirees didn’t get raises, but the retirees that work in the public sector, the public employees unions, got a 3 percent raise. I don’t know where he got his information, but I’m one of those retirees from the public sector and we did not get any 3 percent raise either. So it’s the same thing throughout Illinois. He better get his record straight before he starts blasting his mouth.

Jerry, Chicago Heights

Incorporation, home rule, outrageous property taxes and high water bills are forcing families to flee Homer Glen. People who built homes 20 to 25 years ago are selling them for what they paid for them. Large families have moved out already, and retired seniors are moving in. Homer Glen is becoming more of a retirement village and it stopped growing. No new businesses want to move in. Not even a guy with a hot dog wagon wants to come to Homer Glen. Village and township elected officials are to blame.

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred told former player and manager Pete Rose, who got a lifetime ban for betting on baseball, “No, we won’t let you back in.” I guess, Pete, you just have to start taking drugs the next time because that’s the only way you’ll get in. A few bucks here and there doesn’t mean a thing. But if you take drugs, you’re on the top, baby.

John, Bridgeport

Nearly 300 shootings and 51 murders in January in Chicago. We are reverting to the days of the Wild West when disputes were settled with guns. Bring back Matt Dillon on his horse to police the streets.

When did tossing cans, bottles, wrappers and other garbage along the roadside become acceptable? This is one social, health and environmental problem that can easily be solved. But if we do not practice responsible habits and teach them, it will only get worse. Keep a plastic bag in your auto and put your garbage there. Must I add, please put the bag into a garbage can when you get home?
