Ted Slowik’s article in Thursday’s Southtown was interesting, but I disagree with his final comment. Seems to me this is going to be a no-win situation for Tinley taxpayers. They’re either getting low-income housing or will foot the bill for the legal fees the village will rack up trying to stop it.

To the folks who are complaining about the Palos Health and Fitness Center closing, do you realize it is owned by Palos Hospital, a for-profit entity? The hospital is there to make a profit for its investors. The larger the profit, the better. Of course they want to serve the public and promote health but, as with any other for-profit business, they are there to make as much money as they can. All hospitals, except those owned by the public, are in business to make money, and they compete viciously for patients. So since they believe they can make more money by opening another physicians’ office building, whose doctors will send more patients to their hospital, the health club is a dead issue. Capitalism sometimes isn’t very nice.

Every three years, I file an appeal on my property taxes. Every three years, I receive a tax reduction. Can someone tell me why I am inconvenienced every three years to get my tax liability right, and every three years the assessor’s office consistently gets it wrong?

Religious belief is totally based on emotion. Over the past 200 years, the Bible has been resoundingly shown to be false through archaeological evidence, the historical record and scientific discovery. However, most Christians swear the Bible is the absolutely truthful and proven word of God. Evolution, on the other hand, which has passed every litmus test presented to it, from anatomy to zoology, for over 157 years, not the least of which is molecular genetics, is considered bunk by most Christians. If that isn’t emotion, I don’t know what is.

My car wouldn’t start recently so I walked from 104th Street and Southwest Highway in Worth to McDonald’s at 111th Street and Southwest Highway. I couldn’t believe all the trash and filth along the highway, especially on the south side of the street. There was such filth. It was very, very, very dirty.

I see where some of the subjects on former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s phone were top secret. She said there was nothing there. As she described it, what she found was the secret identity of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the Green Arrow. That’s what she considered top secret, so I guess we don’t have to worry about that.

I saw this big argument about the Academy Awards and the lack of diversity in the nominees. As a poor man, I see these guys earning millions of dollars a film. Tell them not to work. Avoid the money or donate it all to charity. Solve the problem. Don’t create a problem. You get plenty of money. If you don’t like one, it doesn’t matter. If you don’t want the money, give it away to charity. There’s a lot of people who need money. You’ll be doing something good. Instead of complaining about it, do something good.

The Second Amendment gives us the right to bear arms. Fifty-six people were murdered and nearly 300 were shot in January in Chicago. What’s the matter with this picture?

Donna Vickroy’s column on her dog Ted was so wonderful. It brings back memories of the dogs in our lives and the sadness of losing them. She is a great journalist.
