Nearly every week, someone comments in Speak Out that if people would obey police, they wouldn’t get shot. If it was just that simple, then how do you explain an unarmed black woman being shot to death by Chicago police while opening a front door to let police in. Oh, that’s right, she was just “collateral damage.” Just another person of color whose safety and life didn’t seem to matter to police until after she was shot. Strange how some people automatically accept every police shooting as justified, especially when a member of a minority community is shot.

How does the president think we can screen thousands of Syrian refugees properly when we can’t even background-check our own citizens to buy a handgun without mistakes. Does hostile Syria have a database that we can tap into that completely tells the story of the person in question? I doubt it.

What confuses many is how Mr. Obama can state in the State of the Union address what a great country the U.S. is and its place in the world, and then turn around when “on the road and out of the country” and apologize and denigrate my country.
Pete from Oak Lawn asked, “How busy can a fireman be?” The firemen maybe didn’t have time to clean up because they were on an emergency and came back half-frozen and exhausted. How many fireman and policemen miss their kids’ plays or games because they worked a three-day shift? Sixteen years ago on a Sunday at 7 a.m. I cardiac-arrested. My wife called 911. Firemen arrived at my home within minutes and brought me back to life. On my way to the hospital I went out again. They jump-started me. I am 76 and will never forget those 103rd Street and Kostner Avenue firemen. I hope you never need a fireman. Karma is a funny thing. Thanks again, firemen.

I think it’s terrible that Beyonce used the Super Bowl to put a message to the people against the police but, yet, she uses the police to protect her. I’m sure she’s going to want them to protect her when she comes here for her concerts at Soldier Field in Chicago. If I was the police, I would refuse. Thank God we had a class act like Lady Gaga singing the national anthem. She knows how to act like a star.

To the commenter from Oak Forest who says that by this time in 2017 the free rides will be over for President Obama: I have news for you. It won’t be over. He’ll still have his security detail. He’ll still get free rides on the plane. He’ll still get to go to wonderful banquets and make money for himself. He’ll still get to go golfing free. He’ll still get to go on many trips free, but they’re really not free because we, you and I, we pay for them through our taxes. So it’s not over for him. It just means that he’s got more time to spend spending our money.

I’m a concerned citizen who wouldn’t vote for any of these Republican presidential candidates. I’m still waiting for the weapons of mass destruction that former President George W. Bush, said there were. Republican got us into a war we’re still in and that cost millions. Not everybody is ideal, but I want a Democrat. Hillary Clinton would be the one I vote for. Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders is too much of a socialist who wants to get rid of Social Security and Medicare. Hillary deserves a chance. She’s an intelligent woman with experience. There’s only one person who hasn’t made a mistake in life. That man’s in heaven, so don’t be so critical of Hillary. The Republicans running stink.
