All the garbage was flowing through the streets of Hammond on a windy Friday. Meanwhile, Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. was throwing a party for 219 Day at the Hammond Civic Center. Celebrate the stench, Hammond people.

There are three things in life you just don’t do: You don’t spit in the wind, you don’t pull the mask off the character the Lone Ranger and never, ever tug on the cape of the pope like Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump did when Pope Francis criticized Trump’s idea to build a wall along the Mexican border.

Concerning Pope Francis’ statement about the wall Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump suggests being built along the Mexican border being unChristian, doesn’t the Vatican have giant solid gates for protection? They have to be anchored to a wall. The American wall will have an entrance for legal immigrants so why is Trump considered unchristian by the pope? It doesn’t make sense.

I am ashamed and embarrassed when I travel around Merrillville. This town used to be thriving and an awesome place to live in. Now, it is nothing more than a garbage dump with restaurants and gasoline stations. I wonder where all of Merrillville’s past politicians are at now. I’ll bet those councilmen are living the good life. How shameful. How can they look at themselves in the mirror?

Instead of demonstrating in protest, try working. If you can’t come up with any job at all, start helping out your neighbors or relatives or cleaning your local block, park or street. No one owes you anything.

I think our country has a right to build a wall to separate us from Mexico if we so desire.

What is so great about the cultural exchange with Cuba? It’s more like a money exchange. If Cuba is so great, why don’t those Cubans that came here illegally start packing to go back to their homeland?

What are those monster bridges across U.S. 12 and U.S. 24? It’s a hiking trail to nowhere. I drive under those bridges several times a week and never saw a person on them. Now, Indiana 49 has been there for many years so they are building a guardrail on the side for several miles into Indiana Dunes State Park in Chesterton. Is this for another hiking trail? It’s been over two years in the making so thank you and goodbye.

I received a postcard that says the Gary Car-X Tire & Auto has moved to Merrillville. I am not following you out there. You were down by the shopping center. Now you’re way out on U.S. 30. I’ll find somebody else. Goodbye and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

American Water is now coming in and adjusting your meters. They’re moving the meters up but, first, we need to pay more money. Everyone in the area’s water bill has escalated. I think we need to have an investigation.

Even more about mayors around here spending money on frivolous things: Get some more police officers. If you’re going to keep building, you better get some more police officers out there that can do the job instead of this one little squeaky guy just riding around all the time wasting gasoline. Why don’t you sit still at some of these stop signs in the parking lots like in Wal-Mart, Meijer and Menards and see them running the stop signs? You say it’s private property. Yeah, but how come you go in there in case somebody robs the place or somebody steals something? You tell me that. So get your butt out there and do the job.

Capitalism is great but when Republican cuts have devastated our education system, our roads, our bridges and all of our infrastructure without any renewal, the road to the American dream has been blocked. Education and jobs are of utmost importance. It’s not that people don’t want to work. It’s just that they can’t find jobs that pay a living wage.
