Matt Szczur would like to guess when he can resume taking batting practice, but the speedy Chicago Cubs’ outfielder is at the mercy of his left side and the medical staff.
Szczur, who is out of minor league options, isn’t sure when he might be able to play in a spring training game. Szczur, who batted .222 in 72 at-bats for the Cubs in 2015, hit off a batting tee for the second consecutive day Monday and said his left oblique feels fine.
Szczur also has been playing catch and running, but there is no timetable for his return after feeling discomfort on Feb. 19.
“I feel better,” Szczur said. “It’s just a slow progression.”
Szczur, 26, was drafted in the 5th round out of Villanova in 2010. He has appeared in 80 big-league games for the Cubs over parts of the last two seasons.
