The winning tweet in this week’s reader poll was @goldengateblond’s observation that “the same people who think gun laws won’t keep guns away from criminals also think bathroom laws will keep perverts out of bathrooms.”

I recently looked over all the winners and nominees for the past two years in order to pick my 40 favorites. I then read them last week at the Idea Potluck, a monthly event at which a group of invited guests get six minutes each to do or say anything they want for an enthusiastic audience.

Rather than subject attendees to one of my political rants or inspirational wheezes, I cribbed the wit and wisdom of others, closing with what is my current favorite of all time, the declaration of novelist Keith Buckley (@deathoftheparty), “Never in a million years would I ask a tambourine man to play a song for me.”
