With Alshon Jeffery sidelinded a few games last year and the uncertainty of Kevin White do the Bears have enough depth at the position? — @Nitro_turtles
Which wide receivers will make the 53-man roster? — @KyleBeckrich
The Bears have 12 wide receivers listed on the roster right now and 13 if you count Marcus Lucas, who is listed as a wide receiver/tight end. That’s a big group of players to sort through and there are probably only one or two spots on the 53-man roster truly up for grabs. Alshon Jeffery, Kevin White, Eddie Royal and Marquess Wilson look locked into spots right now. Royal has a guaranteed base salary of $4.5 million so he isn’t going anywhere after an injury-marred first season with the club. Wilson is entering the final year of his rookie contract so this is a big season for him. I’d expect him to be poised to put together a productive season with an eye toward setting up his future. He isn’t completely locked into a job but would be a strong favorite at this point based on his experience and what he’s accomplished previously. After Wilson, it’s wide open with a variety of candidates. Marc Mariani, playing wide receiver for really the first extended time in his career, looked decent in the slot last year and quarterback Jay Cutler certainly trusted him. That’s the position Daniel Braverman, the seventh-round draft pick, figures to compete at. I don’t know if the team keeps two slot receivers behind Royal. Then you’ve got Josh Bellamy, who was one of the best special teams performers a year ago, Deonte Thompson, who claimed the kickoff return job last November, and Cameron Meredith, who got some playing time when injuries thinned the ranks. Add Derek Keaton, Nathan Palmer and Darrin Peterson to the mix and there is a crowded room for new wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson, who the Bears believe will be a real asset to coach John Fox’s staff. Typically, teams are going to carry six wide receivers on the 53-man roster and generally five will be active on the 46-man gameday roster. They look to have plenty of depth from my vantage point.
