Bulls’ Doug McDermott named to USA Basketball’s Select team

Doug McDermott landed on the 25-player Select team that USA Basketball announced on Tuesday, again placing the Bulls’ forward in the pipeline for future international competition.

The Select team will train with USA Basketball’s National team in Las Vegas from July 18-21, just weeks before the National team competes in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. McDermott also participated on the Select team in 2014, shortly after the Bulls aggressively traded up to acquire the Creighton product on draft day.

Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler and Taj Gibson are previous Bulls with Select team experience. Rose has won two gold medals with the National team in World Cup competition. Butler is hopeful to be named to this summer’s National team later this month.

“Being chosen for the Select team is an honor and it is an important step in becoming involved in USA Basketball’s National team program in the future,” USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo said in a statement.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who will succeed Mike Krzyzewski as National team coach following the Olympics, will oversee the Select team.
