Plano cracking down on use of fireworks
Interim Plano Police Chief Jonathan Whowell said “there is an American right to celebrate but we want people to celebrate with style, grace and care about their neighbors” over Fourth of July weekend.
He said Plano will have extra patrols out looking for people using illegal fireworks.
“You can say we will have zero tolerance for illegal fireworks,” he said.
He said that the citations will result in a $105 fine.
He said that items such as sparklers, smoke bombs and ground-based “fountains” are not prohibited, however anything shot into the air or which explodes is illegal.
Alderman Bob Jones said he is glad that the city will take a more proactive approach to fireworks violations. He said that last year a burning bottle rocket landed on the roof of his house and could have resulted in a serious fire.
Brian Gorgies, a resident of Lakewood Springs, was pleased with Plano’s decision to enforce laws about illegal fireworks. He said that “things have gotten out of hand” and that people don’t stop to think about neighbors with children, pets or returning veterans who are traumatized by the sound of explosions.
