Before shooting at his wife several times, Scott Turyna struck her in the head and body causing bruises, broken bones and a concussion, according to an indictment issued this week by a Kane County grand jury.
Turyna, 65, who is now living in Elburn, is charged with attempted murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated domestic battery and unlawful interference with the reporting of domestic violence in connection to the early May incident in the St. Charles subdivision where the couple lived. Turyna is free on $1 million bail after he was required to post an additional $50,000 bond in June when a judge ruled he had violated an exclusion zone established for his GPS monitoring.
The indictment mirrors the initial charges filed by prosecutors, but includes the general details of injuries suffered by Turyna’s wife of 26 years, and references the possibility Turyna faces an additional 20 years in prison if convicted of attempted murder in which he personally discharged the gun, documents show.
Authorities and court documents, including an order of protection filed against Turyna, described how an evening meal shared by the couple quickly escalated into an attack during which he allegedly held down and beat his wife before she fled their home. Turyna followed her outside and fired at least five gunshots in his wife’s direction before he was subdued by a passerby until police arrived, records show.
The aggravated discharge allegation references the gunshots which were also fired in the direction of a woman who came to Turyna’s wife’s assistance, the indictment shows. A subsequent search of the Turyna home turned up 13 handguns, eight shotguns, four rifles and approximately 3,000 rounds of mixed ammunition, court documents state.
Turyna is scheduled to return to court Aug. 18 for a hearing that could also include his arraignment on the charges.
