Girl Scout delivers care packages to Elgin police

Girl Scout Lorena Miranda, of Algonquin, recently delivered care packages of appreciation to Elgin police. As part of the Girl Scout Promise, each girl acknowledges the importance of service to country and community.

She wanted to do something for the police officers working in community to “let the officers know people appreciate what they do for a living,” said Miranda, who has been a Girl Scout for six years and whose father is an officer.

Her packages of appreciation included boxes of Girl Scout Cookies along with a handmade card and personal letter of thanks. She created the packages and delivered them to police officers.

“I was so nervous at the first station. The officers showed such thanks and seemed really touched by the care packages,” she said.

31st annual Scarecrow Fest contest

The Greater St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau announced the 31st Annual Scarecrow Fest Contest. From Oct. 7-9, the nationally-recognized contest will utilize both Lincoln Park and the James Martin Lot (Cedar and Third Streets) to display dozens of community-created scarecrows.

U46’s Citizens’ Advisory Council

A new school year starts this week for School District U46 families, providing a new opportunity to get involved with the District’s Citizen’s Advisory Council.

For over half a century, citizen and parent volunteers that live within U46 boundaries have served as liaisons between their schools, the Citizen’s Advisory Council, and the school district. Citizen’s Advisory Council members identify students’ needs and bring ideas to the District. Citizen’s Advisory Council representatives attend monthly meetings and are encouraged to join a committee.

The goal of the Citizen’s Advisory Council is to advise and assist the Board of Education and Administration in the ongoing effort to provide the best possible educational opportunities for U46 students.

To volunteer, contact the principal at one of the schools in your attendance zone or call the district’s community relations office at 847-888-5000 ext. 5300.

Become a West Dundee ambassador

The Village of West Dundee has recently begun to formalize a program to recruit and utilize volunteers within the community. The West Dundee Ambassador Program was formed with the purpose of creating a centralized list of individuals who are interested in giving of their time and talents in order to match these folks up with opportunities as they arise.

Residents can register for the program by completing the volunteer application available at www.wdundee.org.

Ambassador Program participants will be added to the Village Newslist email subscription. As programs and volunteer events develop, an email will be sent to notify ambassadors and community members.
