End summer at Heritage Fest

End the summer with a bang at West Dundee and East Dundee Heritage Fest, a three day festival being held Friday, Sept. 15 to Sunday, Sept. 18.

The fest begins at 6 p.m. Friday with food, music on both sides of the Fox River and fireworks at 8 p.m. The fest expands Saturday and Sunday with the addition of craft and antique fairs, a classic car show, a Baggo Tournament, Chili Cook-off, and kids’ activities.

Healing Fields 9/11 Memorial

Randall Oaks Park in West Dundee will be the site for the Healing Fields 9/11 Memorial on the 15th anniversary of the country’s worst terrorist attacks.

The True Patriots Care Foundation will place 2,976 American flags at the park, at 1180 N. Randall Road, commemorating each life lost on that September morning.

Healing Fields will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day beginning Wednesday, Sept. 7 until Sunday, Sept. 15. The free event raises funds through donations and flag sales for the True Patriots Care Charities. Flags flown during the event will be available for purchase, according to True Patriots Care Charities’ webpage.

Plant sale to help Hampshire library

Ella’s Friends, a support group for Ella Johnson Memorial Public Library, 109 South State Street in Hampshire, is holding its annual mum sale.

“Chrysanthemums in a variety of colors can be ordered at the library until Friday, Sept. 9, for pickup on Saturday, Sept. 17,” said Ron Anderson of Ella’s Friends. “The cost is $12 per plant or three for $30. Payment must be made by cash or check when ordered. This year, the mums are being furnished by Prairie View Farm Market in Hampshire. Proceeds from the sale and other Ella’s Friends fundraisers are used to purchase items and support programs not provided for in the regular library budget.”

Illinois Brews at Bowes Creek fundraiser

The Illinois Brews at Bowes Creek will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the country club, 1250 Bowes Creek Blvd., Elgin. The event will feature Illinois craft and home brew tasting, live music and raffles, according to the city of Elgin’s website.

Tickets are $35 in advance for the Ample Ale Package and $15 for the designated driver. The day of the event, tickets are $45 for the package and $25 for the designated driver. You must be 21 or older to attend.

Stonegate Road closed through November

Stonegate Road is closed to thru traffic, between Sawmill Lane and County Line Road, until November for construction on approximately a 0.6 mile section of the roadway, according to the village of Algonquin’s website.

The project includes removal and replacement of existing road surface, including spot curb and gutter, driveway, and sidewalk replacements, the website stated. Detour routes are posted with thru traffic being detoured to Hanson Road via Harnish Drive and County Line Road, it stated. Local traffic will be permitted access to households in the area for the duration of the project, it stated.

The total construction cost of this project is approximately $589,000 and is being funded by the village, the website stated.

Elgin Township social service funding

Elgin Township seeks local social service agencies that serve Elgin Township residents to apply for upcoming grant funding, according to a news release from Elgin Township.

Social service funding applications are available at www.elgintownship.com. Applications are due by Friday, Oct. 7 and can be dropped off or mailed to Elgin Township 729 S. McLean Blvd, Elgin, IL 60123. Please include 6 copies of applications. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Agency representatives are encouraged to be present for any questions at the Nov. 7 board meeting at 6 p.m. but it is not mandatory. Grants will be awarded in November and funding available in December.

Homework help from Hanover Township tutors

School is back in session so now is the time to enroll children in the Hanover Township Tutoring Services Program. Tutors, board certified teachers, will support and teach the skills and knowledge needed to excel at school.

The program is offered for Hanover Township residents. The fee is $45 per semester, which is about 10 weeks. Non-residents may apply, depending on available space. There is a different fee for non-residents.

Guided evening hikes at Kane County forest preserves

Get your daily 10,000 steps in, during evening hikes with the Forest Preserve District of Kane County.

Each month, a two-hour hike at a different forest preserve is offered. “Trek with a Naturalist” programs are designed for those who like active hiking. The hikes will be led by a naturalist, who will interpret the ecology of the preserve, along the way, according to a forest preserve press release.

The first will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8 at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, 37W700 Dean St., Saint Charles. Meet at the Great Western Trail, on the south side of Dean Street.

The second hike will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 at Campton Forest Preserve, 4N379 Town Hall Road, Saint Charles.

The third hike will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12 at Muirhead Springs Forest Preserve, 42W855 Bahr Road, Hampshire.

DNA’s Annual Pub Crawl

The Downtown Neighborhood Association’s Annual Pub Crawl comes crawling back to downtown from 6 to 11 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23.

The theme of this year’s Pub Crawl is “Game Shows.”

Participating businesses include Martini Room, Dog’s Paw Brewing, Smooth Fox, Eaton’s Redwood Inn, Danny’s Pizza, The Afterset, Chooch’s Pizzeria, Blue Box Cafe, and Mama Lee’s Gourmet Popcorn.

Tickets start at $15 and include Pub Crawl Passport, T-shirt, drink specials, and opportunities to win prizes. This event is for age 21 and up.

Part of the proceeds will be donated to Rescue Warriors Corp, a no-kill animal rescue.
