Naperville could soon add an electronics recycling option to its residential recycling drop-off center on Fort Hill Drive.
The Naperville City Council is expected to consider the proposal in October, according to a recent staff report. Right now, Naperville does not offer electronics recycling.
The Naperville proposal would involve a plan by DuPage County to partner with eWorks Electronics Services Inc. The company would collect all residential electronics, charging a fee for those with screens, according to the report.
It would cost $25 to recycle televisions, monitors and other items with screens 21 inches and smaller. Anything larger would cost $35. All other items could be dropped off without cost, according to the report.
Naperville officials were not available for comment on the proposal Tuesday.
The facility would be staffed by eWorks and be located at the city’s Environmental Collections Campus on Fort Hill Drive. If approved, the collection site would be open 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., according to the report.
The new recycling services are important, as 2012 state law requires residents to recycle televisions, among other electronics, and keep them out of landfills.
Residents typically were not charged to drop off recyclables at municipal centers, because manufacturers paid to process them. However, more regulations and less funding forced many recyclers out of business. Of those remaining, many stopped taking televisions and other screen items, as the cost to recycle them was too great.
