Lowell senior Joselyne Bobos has always had a passion and love for basketball. She got that idiolizing her sister Katie growing up.

But Bobos’ mom Ann played college volleyball, so Joselyne gave that sport a whirl to make her happy.

A four-year letterwinner for the Red Devils in volleyball, Bobos has commited to NAIA Division I Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne to play basketball. She’s also on the tennis team and touts a 3.9 GPA, which ranks 10th in the senior class.

“JoJo has always been a phenomenal student,” Lowell coach Dana Radtke said. “But’s she’s a tremendous athlete too. She’s been on the volleyball team four years, but she’s really having a breakout year for us after being mostly a front-row player.

“She’s been protecting the front line for so long, but now she’s playing all around and defending in the back row, and has picked it up on her service game too.”

This season, Bobos has 67 kills, 85 blocks and 33 aces for Lowell (14-3). She’s also one of four seniors that has seen the program go from a sub-.500 record three years ago to 21 wins last season to this year’s start.

The Red Devils are even talking about challenging Munster and Lake Central at sectional time. Lowell hasn’t won a sectional title since 2005. The Mustangs and Indians have the won the last 10 championships.

“I believe my teammates have really come together more this season,” Bobos said. “We want to go out there and play for each other.

“We’ve been looking to win sectionals for a long time. One of our goals is to be undefeated on our home court.”

The Red Devils’ first test will Thursday against Munster, which hasn’t lost a conference match in five years.

Radtke said her girls are ready to take the next step.

“It takes a lot to be 14-3,” Radtke said. “It takes understanding the game and being able to read hitters and other intangibles.

“These are very smart girls. They put a lot of work in the classroom and that evolves into becoming hard working athletes. I think they are ready.”

Hungry like the Wolves: Michigan City finished 4-0 this weekend, including a 20-25, 26-24, 15-13 win over DAC foe Valparaiso to win its own tournament. Junior Kylie Filipiak had 12 kills in the win over the Vikings, while Allison Ruhe had 19 digs and Karmen Halfacre added 15.

Glads crusing along: Gavit rolled over Hammond in three games Thursday to improve to 3-0 in the Great Lakes Athletic Conference. Kayla Phelps led with 18 kills and 15 digs, while Rebecca Cruz had 15 digs and three aces.
