A student accidentally spilled hydrochloric acid on her shoe during a biology lab Monday afternoon at St. Xavier University on the Far Southwest Side.

The acid did not come in contact with her skin and the student was not sent to the hospital, according to university spokesman Karla Thomas.

“She’s not seeking any further treatment,” Thomas said.

A half a gallon of hydrochloric acid spilled accidentally at the school, 3700 W. 103rd St. in the city’s Mount Greenwood neighborhood, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Thomas said the classroom was likely evacuated, but no one was injured during the incident, which happened about 5:15 p.m.

Firefighters canceled the hazardous materials incident, but one person was possibly injured, the Fire Department initially said.
