Monday’s high temperature of 88 degrees at O’Hare International Airport made it the warmest Sept. 19 since 1978. Midway Airport recorded a high of 89 degrees, just 4 degrees shy of the record set there in 1955. Unofficially, readings topped 90 degrees near Wrigley Field and at a few other locations citywide. Maximum sunshine, southwest winds gusting as high as 27 mph and low humidity contributed to Monday’s near-record warmth. Tuesday is expected to bring lower temperatures, especially near Lake Michigan, but daytime readings are still forecast to peak well above normal. The modest cooling is to arrive behind a cold front that triggered scattered severe storms Monday afternoon over southern Wisconsin and Iowa. Hail over 2 inches in diameter pelted areas near Madison, Wis.
