Bernard Mims, who spent 12 years in prison for the October 2000 killing of an off-duty Cook County Jail officer, was released Oct. 27, 2016, after prosecutors threw out his conviction. Mims’ lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, said Mims was bedridden at the time of the killing after being shot himself about 10 days earlier.
