Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

It’s not pulp fiction. Every part of your family’s carved pumpkin will be put to good use if you bring it to the free Pumpkin Drop, 12:30-1:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at Keith Mione Community Park, 1401 N. Midlothian Road, Mundelein.

“We go to the top of our hill and we have the kids roll down their pumpkins. The furthest pumpkin gets a prize,” said Michael Gerton, aquatics supervisor of Mundelein Park and Recreation District. “We have little side games. You can throw your pumpkin for distance or smash it with a baseball bat.”

Big Red, the trebuchet/catapult designed and built by Mundelein High School students, will send 20 pumpkins flying. “We load it with pumpkins and launch them off the top of the hill,” said Gerton, who noted this is a “green” event since all pumpkin remains are sent to be composted.

But most of all it’s fun. “There’s something about smashing pumpkins that gets people going,” Gerton said.
