A laundry room fire Friday caused smoke damage to a South Elgin home, the South Elgin Fire District said.

The fire was reported at 2:50 p.m. in a house in the 2000 block of Brookwood Drive in the Thornwood subdivision, the district said in a news release. Firefighters found black smoke coming from the garage of the home, the release said.

Residents of the home assisted an elderly man in getting out of a walkout basement, the release said. No injuries were reported.

The fire was contained to the laundry room, but the first and second floors were damaged by smoke.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No dollar amount for the damage has been determined, the release said.
