I am old enough to remember well a time when a large percentage of those 70 years old and older had retirement incomes below — and even well below — the designated poverty level. It would appear that President Donald Trump and his Republican allies have little problem with returning to those bleak days. The safety nets, including affordable health insurance, created over many decades, and supported by required payroll deductions and employer contributions, have lowered fear and anxiety and allowed retirees at the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum to live with a modest measure of security and some dignity. Are we really prepared to take that away?
