Jim Abrams, the chief operating officer of Medline, emailed Mayor Rahm Emanuel in 2011 on the city’s loan for the old Michael Reese hospital property that former Mayor Richard M. Daley purchased as part of the failed bid for the 2016 Olympics. In the email, Abrams, a close friend of the mayor’s, discusses terms of refinancing the loan Medline provided to the city to buy the property. Abrams suggested cutting the interest rate for the city, and the Emanuel administration structured the deal so that Medline did not have to pay taxes on the profits as it did originally – an arrangement that could boost the company’s profit. Abrams had not registered as a lobbyist. Read more emails to Rahm Emanuel here.
