Less than five months after helping the Chicago Cubs to the World Series title, second baseman Javier Baez has a chance to lead Puerto Rico to the World Baseball Classic championship.
Baez went 2-for-4 with a dynamic stolen base Monday night as Puerto Rico rallied for a 4-3 win over The Netherlands in 11 innings at Dodger Stadium.
Baez and Puerto Rico will play the winner of Tuesday night’s semifinal between the United States and Japan for the WBC title on Wednesday night.
Trailing 3-2 in the fourth, Baez attempted a steal of third base in which he extended his arms before employing a swim move with his left arm in an attempt to avoid a tag by third baseman Xander Bogaerts.
Baez originally was called out but immediately signaled to his dugout to review the call, which was overturned on replay.
In six WBC games so far, Baez has 8 hits in 24 at-bats (.333) with 1 home run, 5 runs batted in and 4 stolen bases.
