Nominations collected for Good Citizen Award

Nominations are sought for the 2017 Sgt. Karen Lader Memorial Good Citizen Award, open to any resident of Maine Township.

The annual award recognizes a resident who has “demonstrated strong support and dedication to his/her community,” according to Maine Township.

Nomination forms can be found at www.mainetownship.com or at Maine Township Town Hall, 1700 Ballard Road, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.

The deadline for submissions is April 3.

The award is named in memory of Cook County Sheriff’s Police Officer Karen Lader, a resident of Des Plaines, who was involved in unincorporated Maine Township’s Neighborhood Watch program and National Night Out.

Maine South collecting electronics

Maine South High School will be a collection site for old electronics from March 27 through April 3.

Collection boxes will be located at Door 3 of the school, located at 1111 S. Dee Road, between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., said student Serenity Torres, whose geology class is organizing the project.

Used phones, laptop computers, electronic toys, printers and other electronics will be accepted, Torres said. Items collected will be delivered to Action Metals Recycling.

Education Foundation plans annual benefit

The Maine Township High School District 207 Education Foundation’s ninth annual benefit dinner, “The Maine Event,” will take place on April 6, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Cafe La Cave, 2777 Mannheim Road in Des Plaines.

The education foundation provides funding for “enhanced and innovative learning experiences” at all three District 207 schools, the organization said. The annual benefit dinner is the group’s largest fundraiser.

Emcees for the evening will be Cathy Glunz, foundation chair; Phil Berquist, treasurer; and Rose Garlasco, a retired assistant principal who worked at Maine South and Maine West. Entertainment will be provided by the Maine East Jazz Band, and the Maine South Constitution Team is scheduled to speak on “the challenges faced by our democracy in the 21st Century, especially making our political system more understandable to the average citizen,” the foundation said.

The evening will also include dinner, cash bar, silent auction and raffle.

Senior Expo held April 28

The 11th annual MaineStreamers “Swing into Spring” Senior Expo will take place April 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Golf Mill Shopping Center in Niles.

The expo is scheduled to feature a variety of exhibits and is “designed to link seniors who need services with vendors who provide them,” according to Maine Township, which oversees the MaineStreamers senior group.

Free bingo will also be held from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by free caricatures by Mark Schultz from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and a performance by John Trucali from 1 to 2 p.m., the township said.
