Anthony Rizzo was somewhat reluctant to unveil a surprise Wednesday for shifting defenses, but the Chicago Cubs slugger thought a minor league game against the Oakland Athletics provided the perfect forum to work on his latest weapon.
That surprise was a bunt down the third base line as a response to teams that shift to the right side.
“It’s going to happen during the year a lot,” said Rizzo, who preferred to work on it in a minor league game despite the presence of scouts that included the Atlanta Braves and Minnesota Twins.
Rizzo, who has hit at least 31 home runs in each of the past three seasons, was adamant about attempting bunts. Rizzo described a situation where the odds might be better for him bunting down the third base line instead of trying to pull the ball to right field with the wind blowing in at Wrigley Field.
“It’s all situational depending on the setting,” Rizzo said.
