In the ’80s and ’90s, a handful of names dominated Chicago’s Italian restaurant scene. Paul Bartolotta, Tony Mantuano, Peggy Ryan, Paul LoDuca, Nancy Brussat Barocci. And Luigi Negroni.

Negroni starred at the original Carlucci on Halsted Street, and under his tenure, Carlucci was one of the city’s finest Italian restaurants. He went on to oversee all of the Carlucci group’s restaurants and later helped create Davanti Enoteca, which has locations in Chicago and San Diego.

Negroni passed away at the end of January in Italy, not far from Imola, the town where he was born.

A gathering of friends and former colleagues will be held 2-5 p.m. Sunday at River Roast (315 N. LaSalle St., 312-822-0100).
