Jon Lester described Busch Stadium as one of his favorite ballparks, which should give him some degree of comfort Sunday night when the Chicago Cubs face the St. Louis Cardinals in the season opener.
Adding to Lester’s familiarity is that the first batter that Lester will face will be Dexter Fowler, Lester’s teammate for the past two seasons.
“How about that,” Lester said late Monday night. “Get that out of the way. That will be good for him and good for us. You get the hellos and goodbyes out of the way, and then he’ll have his first Wrigley reception (on June 2), which I hope is always positive.
“And then once we do that, I don’t like to use the word ‘enemies,’ but you’re an opponent now. I’m trying to get you out and everyone else, and he’s trying to get hits off us. So we’ll put our friendship aside and play baseball. But afterwards, we’ll shake hands and grab a drink or something.”
Kyle Schwarber echoed Lester’s sentiments, saying that Fowler “is still part of the family” but the objective remains to beat him and the Cardinals.
