Giants 3, Cubs 2 (fifth inning)

Jake Arrieta was tagged for three hits in the first inning Tuesday as the Cubs trail the Giants 3-2 after four innings at sunny and breezy Sloan Park. This is the final spring start for Arrieta, who will make his 2017 debut April 4 at St. Louis.

At the plate:

Chesny Young’s performance at the plate has been overshadowed this spring by former first round pick Ian Happ. But Young made a favorable impression on the Cubs’ staff by ripping a two-run home run to left off Matt Cain in the third.

On the mound: Arrieta has settled down after a rocky start by retiring eight consecutive batters. Arrieta allowed a home run to Denard Span on the second pitch of the game, and Span executed a bunt single off Arrieta in the second and scored from second on a wild pitch.

In the field: Javier Baez started at shortstop in place of Addison Russell, who hopes to return as soon as Wednesday after coping with lower back stiffness. Ben Zobrist started in right field and caught a fly by Conor Gillespie with ease to end the third.

Key number: 3 – Home runs by Young this spring.

Up next: Cubs vs. Athletics, 3:05 p.m., Wednesday at Sloan Park. RH John Lackey vs. RH Kendall Graveman.
